Girl

Mother and daughters can either have a good  or a distance relationship.  In the story "Girl" by Jamaica Kincaid, its about a mother telling her daughter everything she needs to know to be a girl.  The narrator in the story is the daughter as she is thinking back when her mother would tell her all these expectations she wanted her to have in life.  Her mother would tell her how to clean, cook, even how to love a man.  Her mother did not want her daughter to become a slut so she was stern to her daughter.  According to the story the mother told her daughter "don't squat down to play marbles-you are not a boy" (178).  This shows different times have different rules.  Present day mothers are more open and the topics are not the same as they were in the story.  Mothers today are trying to keep their daughter from becoming young mothers because people are having sex earlier then ever.  It seems as if a mother and daughter relationships are not as close as they used to.

"The Appointment"

"Running from death is difficult". The story "The Appointment in Samarra" was told in weird and eerie tone, but this story had a great lesson. The lesson was "to not escape death cause it will always haunt you". In this story the servant was to meet death later on and instead death found the servant running away from her in the market.  On the other hand, the video "The Appointment", the lesson is exactly what the fortune teller says to the young man  "you can never escape your future".  In both cases, the future was death and they are trying to escape what destiny has chosen for them.  The story  and video strongly point out that our destiny is written out for us, but we just have to find out where destiny will take us next and not to run away from it.

History of Immigration in America

The United States always had immigrants come to America.  When new immigrants would come to America, that new group was always discriminated.  At one point every ethnic group has been discriminated against.  People do not like certain ethnic groups because of their appearance, culture, and beliefs.  America has been discriminatory towards African-Americans, Irish, Muslims, Japanese, and a lot of others.  They all experienced stares, people ignoring them, and people not hire them.  These immigrants have helped America flourish into the country that it is today.

Geeks And Jocks

People express themselves by wearing clothes that represent their individuality.  For males, they can dress more athletic, or even geeky.  Jocks tend to wear their team jersey, or some form of athletic shirt with a pair of jeans.  Geeks tend to wear pants above their waist, suspenders, and a shirt with pockets for a pocket protector.  Saved By The Bell was a show that was about going thought high school. A.C. Slater was the jock that was the schools star athletic who got all the girls.  Samuel "Screech" Powers was geek that was nerdy, clumsy, and did not have as much luck as A.C. Slater. They were labeled based on their looks and not by personally. The geek wishes that he was more of a jock because they get more attention and popularity.  This does not only happen between geeks and jocks, this problem occurs often with many different styles between a male and female.

Drivers

Dear Drivers at NCC parking lot,

Sometimes I really wonder how people got their licenses. The drivers are very rude and they seem too think its everyone else's fault for their own actions. I hate when you:

• When drivers think they have the right of way entering the main road when they do not at all.
• When they do not signal and just cut you off.
• The park really crooked and then when I park next to that its a hassle
• When drivers go so fast in the parking lot they almost hit people not paying attention to anything
Everyday because of these stupid mistakes, Nassau can see at least one accident a day! People are really annoying when driving and this is why I HATE to drive in the parking lot!  I hope I am not next to get hit because other people can not drive!

Media and Audience

Television have an affect on people's judgement.  Comedy Sitcoms have been the most impacted genre of television. This genre of shows was started in the 1950's.  Even today, sitcoms are still on the air, but they are not as popular as they were.  The shows consist families or a group of friends that had problems just like any person, but have some comedy involved.  This makes people relate to the families on the show and like to watch how they solve the problems that they go though everyday. Some shows include "The Honeymooners", "According To Jim", "George Lopez", "The Big Bang Theory", and "How I Met Your Mother". Many sitcoms might not be on, but even after 60 years years of being around this genre still can make any one laugh.
